We took a side trip to Chichen Itza. It was amazing! It's remarkable that the people knew so much about the seasons and built the structures to demonstrate the seasons. In this case, on the equinox, the sun shines through in such a way to leave a pattern down the sides, making it look like a snake. The snake was a symbol of prosperity and new life.
There is so much symbolism in their architecture and buildings. It was really a neat thing to see.
After seeing the ruins, we made a stop at a Cenote (I probably spelled that wrong -- sorry). They are natural water springs, where the early people were able to get their water supplies. They let people swim in them now (we didn't know, but if we had brought our swimming suits, we could have gone swimming). It was beautiful. It was especially cool seeing the roots from above drop down into the water.
We also took a day to go snorkeling in Cozumel. It was pretty fun, but I probably wouldn't do it again. I had more fun snorkeling in St. John and Hawaii. It still was nice though.
Our last moments were spent at the pool and in the ocean. It was so relaxing! I truly wish we had a few more days to relax, but we had to get home for the holidays. I look forward to going back!
